Dear Oakwood School District and Community,
I hope this note finds you and your families doing well during these summer months. The purpose of this communication is to inform you of a collaborative effort of Illinois Superintendents who are seeking community "local control" for our school districts in determining the best COVID-19 safety measures for the 2021-22 school year.
Attached you will find a copy of a letter that Superintendents are sending to the Governor and State Board of Education Superintendent.
Due to the interest of parents wanting to have a voice for their children, we have also attached a link to a Parent Letter Template that is being used by many communities throughout the state. Please feel free to use this letter template or share it.

CDC mask guidelines for schools to remain for rest of school year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending schools keep to the current COVID-19 guidelines, including mask-wearing and distancing, for the remainder of the school year as most students aren't fully vaccinated. The agency provided the update on May 15 to clear up any confusion by the public following its announcement Thursday that vaccinated Americans can go maskless both indoors and outdoors. The CDC noted that coronavirus vaccines are only available for people over the age of 12, leaving millions of school-age children unprotected from the virus.
Illinois State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala is recommending the State Board of Education vote to approve her declaration: “Beginning with the 2021-22 school year, all schools must resume fully in-person learning for all student attendance days, provided that remote instruction be made available for students who are not eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine and are under a quarantine order by a local public health department or the Illinois Department of Public Health.” The state board will vote on the resolution supporting Ayala’s declaration on Wednesday.
IDPH Update - We have been informed that the IDPH guidelines have not changed for schools as of 5/14/21. We will keep you posted. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The "awesome" of today comes in the form of congratulations to our very own Oakwood Grade School Principal, Nicole Lapenas. She is the newly elected (IPA) Illini Region Communications Chair. Nicole, we are all very proud of you as you expand your leadership! Well done!
